Gastronomy and Tourism Research Group Meeting
20 - 23 February, 2019 - Évora, Portugal
Gastronomy and Tourism: Reflections on local food consumption in urban and rural areas

The updated program for the meeting can be found here

Food, gastronomy and tourism are considered a new area of academic interest (Maberly and Reid, 2014; Okumus et al., 2018) and a marker of social distinction (Okumus et al., 2018; Kim et al., 2009). Among the variety of research topics inside the area of tourism and gastronomy, local food consumption still needs further discussion. As highlighted in the literature, the consumption of local food is affected by a number of factors, destination environments, among others, being an example of a dimension that still needs to be discussed. Moreover, consumption of local food in rural and urban areas provides different perspectives in terms of environmental, social and cultural context. These challenges and perspectives suggest the need to reflect on the differences in how consumption of local food is influenced by the spatial context (rural and urban). Further, this meeting intends to reflect upon, discuss and open new avenues to enlighten researchers and practitioners by suggesting strategies and actions in order to preserve cultural and social authenticity for visitors during the process of their consumption of local food.

University of Évora, Portugal

CIDEHUS – Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Culture and Societies

The University of Évora was founded in 1559 and for two centuries it distinguished itself for its role in the education of the elites and the missionaries of the kingdom. Restored as a public University in 1973, it is aimed at meeting the new requirements of society. It is particularly devoted to the education of human resources who want to achieve a higher position by merit and good service to the community. The University of Évora has established itself through the high quality of its teaching, associated with perennial values such as mutual respect, desire for knowledge, intellectual honesty and freedom of thought. If you want to share it with us and help build the basis for a future with quality, feel welcome to enter our community, based on the motto (quoted from Camões) "Honest study mixed with long experience ".

Évora the historic city lying at the heart of Alentejo, is heir to a rich and diverse cultural heritage, built and preserved over time. Founded (or refounded) by the Roman and by them called Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, the city was the stronghold that consolidated in Além-Tejo (beyond-tejo) the formation of the new kingdom of Portugal, during the twelfth century Christian peninsular reconquest. Following the consolidating of frontiers with Castela, several kings settled his court here particularly in the period of the maritime expansion. The well-preserved historic and artistic heritage of the city, resulted in good measure of that long permanence of the royal court. The monumental set that these golden times bequeathed to the city in harmony with the urban fabric of popular nature, underlie the classification of Évora as World Cultural Heritage since 1986.
