Background

European integration has produced major changes in the production and consumption of leisure and tourism, with increased convergence of consumer demand and transnational service provision set against a desire for individuality, identity construction and distinction. The New Member states have found it particularly hard to make the transition to a market economy at the same time as production and consumption are becoming globalised. Past editions of the WU have analysed this process from the perspective of the 'culturisation' of leisure and tourism (increasing circulation of cultural symbols, etc) and the touristification of culture and physical environments (built heritage).

In recent years the problems generated by traditional culture-led development strategies have caused cities and regions to look to creative development. Although epitomised by the work of Richard Florida (2001) in the USA, creative strategies have been widely adopted in Europe, through creative clusters and quarters, creative industries strategies and the development of 'creative tourism'.

The shift from tangible heritage and culture to intangible creativity poses a challenge for businesses and policy makers. The leisure, culture and tourism sectors have become used to dealing with 'services' which can be packaged into leisure 'products', but there is now a need to understand the implications of the expanding experience economy, the increasing integration of leisure, tourism, work and the rise presumption for the study of leisure. These developments fall outside the traditional disciplines and are currently under-developed in higher education courses in Europe. The WU therefore provides an important opportunity for participants to develop their existing curricula in the relatively new area of creative development and consumer experience, and to link their programmes together in a way that facilitates comparative educational strategies. This may also serve to counter the existing (predominantly American) paradigms prevalent in this field by constructing an alternative, European, view of tourist experience.

Aims and objectives

The basic aim of the WU is to examine the consequences of European integration for leisure and tourism consumption and production.

The objectives of the 2008/2009 edition will be:

The WU will seek to build our understanding of creative development strategies in different EU contexts, examining the effects of creative development from different disciplinary perspectives.

Winter University Host (New)

Tourism Sant Ignasi (TSI), as a Jesuit-inspired center for higher education, has a mission to provide first-class training and education in order to offer top quality service in the tourism sector.

TSI offers a solid portfolio of training programs that are characterized by their quality, their international nature and their distinct orientation to the comprehensive development of professional and human competencies. The University initiative arose from the close cooperation between the two institutions (ESADE and Tourism Sant Ignasi) in accordance with their line of innovative educational and training proposals combining the human factor with high technology, academia with the business world and local identity with a universal mission.

Located in a catalogued modernist style building designed in 1895 by the architect Joan Martorell tourism has been taught in Sant Ignasi since 1987 / 1988 and the subject area has now become the school flagship in its development as the Tourism School at the Universidad Ramon Llull.

Travel (Updated)

From Barcelona Airport, take the train to the Sants train station (every 30 minutes, journey time 20 minutes). From Sants it is a 10 minute walk along Carrer Numancia towards Diagonal. You can take the metro (L-3 green line) from Sants station, to "María Cristina" Station, which leaves you with a shorter walk along Diagonal. If you buy a T-10 1 zone ticket at the Airport train station this will cover your journey to the hostel (including the metro). A T-10 costs €7.20 and gives you 10 single trips on buses, metros and trains within Barcelona.

A slightly more expensive route with less walking - take the airport bus to Placa Catalunya and then the 68 bus to the junction of Diagonal and Carrer Numancia.
