Destinations revisited
|
|
Viana do Castelo, Portugal, 5 - 7 September 2007 |
Tourist destinations worldwide are facing a growing number of challenges in developing, managing and marketing their products in a competitive and rapidly-changing environment. Not only do destinations need to appeal to new audiences, but they increasingly need to re-invent themselves to ensure repeat visitation. This conference seeks to develop new perspectives on these challenges which affect not only traditional sun, sea and sand destinations, but a growing range of different destination types, including cities, rural areas, cultural centres and leisure and entertainment complexes. The aim is to bring together tourism professionals and tourism academics to exchange ideas on issues related to developments in the theory and practice of developing and managing tourism destinations.
The 2007 ATLAS conference is also a practical exercise in repeat visitation. A decade after the first ATLAS International Conference in Portugal in 1997, ATLAS will be revisiting Viana do Castelo, providing repeaters and first-time ATLAS delegates with the opportunity to review a decade of change.
The ATLAS International Conference 2007 is being organised by ATLAS and the Tourism Laboratory of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (Portugal).

The official language of the conference is English.
Abstracts should be submitted via this form, no later than May 31, 2007. All field need to be filled in. Abstracts (approximately 300-500 words) should indicate background, theoretical / practical implications, methods and / or data sources, and indicative findings of the paper. The title should be no more than 12 words. Up to 6 keywords / themes should be selected from the list to indicate clearly to which theme(s) of the conference their proposed paper relates to. The Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) was established in 1991 to develop transnational educational initiatives in tourism and leisure. ATLAS provides a forum to promote staff and student exchange, transnational research and to facilitate curriculum and professional development. ATLAS currently has members in more than 70 countries. ATLAS is also represented at regional and local level by sections such as ATLAS Europe, ATLAS Asia-Pacific and ATLAS Africa. ATLAS Europe was founded in 1991, and still attracts the bulk of ATLAS members. Other sections are growing rapidly, however. ATLAS Asia-Pacific, established in 1997, currently has 76 members. ATLAS Asia-Pacific has staged conferences in Indonesia, China and Japan. ATLAS Africa was launched in 1998 and held its inaugural conference in 2000 in Kenya, with subsequent conferences in Tanzania and South Africa. ATLAS Africa currently has around 50 members. At the moment initiatives are taken to develop ATLAS Americas. The regional sections of ATLAS have developed their own programme of activities and publications to respond more closely to the specific needs of members located in these regions and those with related research interests. Membership of ATLAS regional associations and special interest sections of ATLAS is open to all ATLAS members. Members of ATLAS can form Special Interest Groups (SIG's) related to specific education and research topics or for specific geographical areas. SIG's run research programmes and can organise special events and publications related to their area of interest. See www.atlas-euro.org/SIG/sig.htm for further information on the current SIGs.

The entire conference will take place at the campus of the Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (School of Technology and Management) of the Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo), a relatively new higher education institution that has developed rapidly over the last fifteen years to become a major provider of higher education in peripheral northern Portugal.
The 1997 ATLAS Conference was hosted by this institution. At the time, the Tourism Studies Course was in its 8th year of existence. Since then, the tourism programme has been transformed into what is today considered one of the top programmes in the country. In 2005, the Tedqual Certification Committee of the Institute for Quality in Tourism Education of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) approved the Bachelor in Tourism Management Programme for Certification.
There will be a local committee comprised of staff members and coordinated by Carlos Fernandes and the Tourism Laboratory to make all the necessary arrangements.
Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (School of Technology and Management) is situated on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, made special arrangements for delegates to stay at our Solares de Portugal, manor houses, in the Alto Minho region, mostly in the municipalities of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo. Because there is a wide selection of Solares de Portugal, delegates are asked to book directly so as to select the manor house which best suits their individual (or group) need. Whereas before delegates had to arrange own transportation to get to the conference venue, special arrangements have now been made in which delegates may be transferred between the manor houses (outside of Viana do Castelo) and the conference venue or other location included in the conference programme, at an additional cost of €10,00 per person and per day. Delegates must inform ATLAS if they require transport (admin@atlas-euro.org). This offer is limited to bookings through the reservations centre www.center.pt or reservas@center.pt. |
