Cultural Tourism: Negotiating Identities

Universidade de Trás-Os-Montes e Alto Douro - Pólo de Chaves (Northern Portugal) |
Chaves has been a spa town for many centuries. Even the Romans have explored the thermal water that continues to boil up out of the ground at 73 º C. It has a rich patrimony: in the Middle Ages the foundations of the fortified city walls were constructed, you can find different baroque churches in the city centre, the most important city quarters have recently been rearranged… Due to its location, the town has always had privileged close contact with the neighbours of Galicia.
This expert meeting of the ATLAS Cultural Tourism Research Group is designed to reflect on tourism - from an interdisciplinary approach - as a cross-cultural activity and to gain an intercultural perspective. The meeting will create the opportunity to exchange ideas about transnational cooperation in cultural tourism and it aims to compare case studies and experiences within different contexts. Given the location of the meeting in the small town of Chaves (North of Portugal) near the border with Galicia (Spain) we will reflect on the question of how the proximity of a border influences cultural tourism. As a matter of fact we are creating new identities, as national-state borders in the European Union are no longer an obstacle to travel. What is the role of cultural tourism in this context? What has happened on other continents?
The agenda will cover a number of themes through brief presentations, but the emphasis will be on exchanges and discussions. Candidate presenters are invited to submit their paper in advance for evaluation by Scientific Committee. The accepted papers will be distributed to all participants.
The meeting, which will be held in October 2006, will give participants the opportunity to experience traditional elements of cultural tourism in the North of Portugal such as gastronomy, wine culture, rural tourism, spas and others.
The ATLAS CTRG invites you to submit papers related to any of the themes of the meeting. Preference will be given to the contributions of current CTRG members. New group members and other participants are especially encouraged to submit papers. Aspiring participants should submit an abstract of their paper (between 500 and 1000 words) for initial consideration by the Scientific Committee by May 30, 2006. The abstract should include the full contact details of the author and indicate the relationship of the paper with its respective research programme and the theoretical and/or practical relevance of the subject covered. Please submit your abstract by email to Greg Richards (greg@tram-research.com)
Based on the abstracts received, invitations to write full papers will be issued, which must be submitted by September 1st, 2006.
An official invitation to the meeting will be forwarded after submission and acceptance of the full paper. The selection of papers for publication will be made after the expert meeting.
