The transformation of tourism spaces
|
|
Lodz, Poland, 20-22 September 2006 |
Herewith the final information for participants:
ATLAS and the University of Lodz are pleased to host the ATLAS annual conference in 2006. The conference will be held in the premises of Lodz University in September 2006.
The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity to exchange opinions and discuss the impacts of systemic and political transformation on tourism, which is taking place in different regions and countries in the beginning of the 21st century. Within the wide scope of the conference, special attention will be paid to geographical and environmental changes in global tourism.
The tremendous and deep global geopolitical, socio-economic and technological changes in the turn of the XX/XXI centuries cause deep and extremely varied impacts on the manifestations of the tourist industry on global, national, regional and local scale. They reflect changes in the motivations, character, spacing, economic patterns, cultural and environmental consequences of the contemporary tourism.
In fact, a profound transformation of tourism is undergoing worldwide. There is a general need to address and assess these transformation issues against the background of the origin and host environments. This is particularly evident for the areas, such as Central and Eastern Europe, where the pace and depth of the changes were enormous.
Full papers, communications and presentation of works in progress are invited in the following fields:
These topics do not preclude discussion on other issues linked with the theme. We believe that the above areas of discussion can inspire participants to present their own topics and proposals. The final list of the discussion fields will take into consideration all suggestions.
The official language of the Conference is English. Abstracts should be submitted before May 1st to ATLAS by e-mail (admin@atlas-euro.org) and should include: author's name, title, institution, contact address and e-mail. Abstracts (approximately 300-500 words) should indicate background, practical implications, methods and/or data sources, and indicative findings of the paper. All abstracts will be subject of double blind review process.

You can also get at he conference venue by tram nr 12, a stop just after a big crossroad. To get familiar with tram and bus network in Lodz visit www.mpk.lodz.pl (MPK is the abbreviation of the name of the city transport company) and www.mapa.lodz.pl/eng/ to find detailed map of the city.
Unfortunately, the first website is mainly in Polish, but following instructions can be helpful:
www.mpk.lodz.pl -choose English - choose timetables - to download a map of the tram network choose tramwaje.pdf (direct link http://www.mpk.lodz.pl/files/tramwaje.pdf)
Warsaw Airport handles about 75% of the overall air passenger traffic in Poland. At present, Warsaw Airport operates nearly 60 scheduled flights to/from the biggest airports worldwide and the number of its charter connections is always increasing. The airlines which operate the majority of flights to Poland are Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT, which belong to the best ones in this part of Europe. Except from LOT, many other airlines offer their flights to Poland.
Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport is located in the south-western part of Warsaw, c. 10km from the city centre. The most convenient and recommended way of reaching Lodz is by Polish Express coach (Polski Ekspress), which leaves the airport every two hours starting from 9:00 to 19:00. The bus stop is located on the Arrivals Hall level of the passenger terminal of Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport. The coach arrives at the Lodz Fabryczna bus station after slightly more than 2 hours. (For services, call +48 (22) 620 03 30,or visit: (www.polskiexpress.pl)
The second possibility is to get the train from Warsaw Central Station (Warszawa Centralna) to Lodz Fabryczna. You may get to Warsaw Central Station by bus no. 175 or by TAXI. The bus ticket costs 2,40 zloty (c. 70 euro cents) and it takes about 45 minutes to get from the airport to the train station. The TAXI will be quicker but not in the rush hours. A price you can expect should be around (30 zl) 7-8 euro. Once you arrive at the train station take train to Lodz Fabryczna. The trains leave every hour in the work days. A one-way ticket costs about (30 zl) 8 euro and the journey lasts about 1h 45 min. Look after your packets when you go by bus to the railway station and at the railway station.
The third possibility is to get by plane but the number of flights from Warsaw to Lodz is very limited. The flight lasts 40 minutes. If you travel by LOT (Polish Airlines) to Poland the ticket price usually includes flight from Warsaw to Lodz.
There are also direct flights to Lodz (Lodz Lublinek Airport www.airport.lodz.pl) provided by Polish low-cost carrier Centralwings (www1.centralwings.com) and Ryanair from Dublin, Kiev, London (STN), Nottingham - East Midlands and Berlin
When you get to Lodz, we recommend that you use a taxi to get to a hotel. A price you can expect should be less than 16 zl (4 euro) . We recommend to use a taxi being a part of taxi company such as Taxi 400-400, Taxi 919, Taxi Merc.
There are many international railway connections both with big cities and with smaller towns. High standard trains are worth recommending: IC - InterCity, EC - EuroCity, EN - EuroNight. The main directions are Berlin, Frankfurt am Mein, Wien, Brussels, Bratislava, Budapest, Praha, Lvov, Kiev, Hrodno, Vilnius, Minsk, Moscow, St.Petersburg, Venezia, Bucharest.

ATLAS - The Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS) was established in 1991 to develop transnational educational initiatives in tourism and leisure. ATLAS provides a forum to promote staff and student exchange, transnational research and to facilitate curriculum and professional development. ATLAS currently has members in more than 70 countries. ATLAS is also represented at regional and local level by sections such as ATLAS Europe, ATLAS Asia-Pacific and ATLAS Africa. ATLAS Europe was founded in 1991, and still attracts the bulk of ATLAS members. Other sections are growing rapidly, however. ATLAS Asia-Pacific, established in 1997, currently has 76 members. ATLAS Asia-Pacific has staged conferences in Indonesia, China and Japan. ATLAS Africa was launched in 1998 and held its inaugural conference in 2000 in Mombasa Kenya, with subsequent conferences in Arusha, Tanzania and Pretoria, South Africa. ATLAS Africa currently has around 50 members. At the moment initiatives are taken to develop ATLAS Americas. The regional sections of ATLAS have developed their own programme of activities and publications to respond more closely to the specific needs of members located in these regions and those with related research interests. Membership of ATLAS regional associations and special interest sections of ATLAS is open to all ATLAS members. Members of ATLAS can form Special Interest Groups (SIG's) related to specific education and research topics or for specific geographical areas. SIG's run research programmes and can organise special events and publications related to their area of interest. See www.atlas-euro.org for further information on the current SIGs.
