Networking and partnerships

Naples, Italy |
ATLAS, the Parthenope University and the Research Institute on Service Activities of the National
Research Council are glad to host the ATLAS annual conference 2004.
The conference will bring together academics and tourism industry players from many countries and several continents in order to build bridges between research and industry needs. The conference will provide interaction amongst delegates so that the conference could become a working meeting through presentations, workshops and forum.
The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for the dissemination and discussion of themes related to the common governance of tourism factors for destination development.
In particular, attention will be focussed on the development of networks and partnerships in tourism in response to the changing external and internal environment of the global tourism industry. As we move towards the 'network society', according to Manuel Castells, so the need for tourism enterprises, regions and NGOs to work together will increase significantly. Former competitors are now starting to work together as partners, or at least in 'co-opertition' with each other. We are already seeing a new generation of partnerships between the public sector and the private sector, especially in the field of tourism marketing, but the tourism industry is also increasingly characterised by multi-stakeholder partnerships and networks. The advent of 'networked tourism' raises a number of important issues for all those concerned with tourism development, and particularly those working within tourism destinations. It is easy to create networks, but how can they be sustained? What changes are required in the organisation of tourism in both the private and public sectors to maximise the benefits of networking? Who should lead these networks, and how should they be constituted? How do networks articulate with the local community? Are networks and partnerships always the best answer to the problems facing different destinations?
The conference will attempt to address these and other issues facing tourism in the network society, analysing the issue from a range of perspectives relevant to both academics and practitioners.
Delegates are invited to submit papers relating to any aspect of the conference theme including:
Official language of the conference is English. All abstracts will be subject to double-blind review by at least two members of the Scientific Committee. Acceptance of a submission will be based on theoretical and empirical significance, methodological soundness, technical competency, and logical clarity. ATLAS and IRAT will publish accepted papers after the conference.
Abstracts should be submitted to ATLAS by e-mail (admin@atlas-euro.org) and should include author's name, institution, contact address/e-mail and title. Abstracts (of approximately 200-500 words) should indicate background, theoretical/ practical implications, methods and/or data sources, and indicative findings of the paper.
