The NTG and INCOME Tourism projects are co-organising a special day to bring together tourism education and the tourism industry at the University of Girona on Thursday 14 November, 2019.

The purpose of this day (morning only) will be to bring together professionals from both the tourism industry, tourism education, and governments to talk about the needs in tourism education. The day will include best practice presentations of each one of the project partners regarding university-companies cooperation and/or soft skills training.

The seminar can also be attended as a Webinar.

This seminar consists of:

  • Short presentations of the NTG and the INCOME Tourism projects, including concrete information relevant for the industry.
  • Short presentation from stakeholders from the tourism industry.
  • Discussion session in which partners from education, industry and government can share their findings, thoughts and experiences on tourism education.




Goretti Silva

Goretti Silva is the head of Tourism Studies (UN-WTO Tedqual certified) at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. She obtained her PhD degree at Bournemouth University (UK), about the role of relationships, conceptualized as social capital and social support, in the creation and management of Tourism related small family businesses in rural areas. Her interests include tourism as a strategy for rural development, particularly in peripheral regions and protected areas, SME’s in Tourism, tourism destination sustainable development, university business cooperation and skill and competencies development for the tourism sector. Prior to being a member of academia she has collaborated with several organisations as tourism consultant, being responsible for tourism related research and tourism development policy.  Recently she has started her own business in the tourism sector, Fábrica do Chocolate, Hotel |Rerstaurante| Museu I Viana do Castelo (in operation since 2014). She is involved in several projects as coordinator and team member. Namely she coordinates INCOME Project. As researcher, Goretti has been member of scientific committees, and presented papers, in several conferences, both at national and international level. Is the author and co-author of several scientific papers and articles, and book chapters.

Goretti will give a short introduction on the INCOME Tourism project.

Sheena Carlisle

Dr. Sheena Carlisle is a Senior Lecturer in Tourism Management and Project Manager at Cardiff Metropolitan University for the new Next Tourism Generation (NTG) Project funded by the European Commission. The NTG project aims to provide a Blueprint for Sustainability and Digital Skills in Tourism and Hospitality sectors and build bridges between education and industry for sustainable tourism development. Sheena has enthusiasm for exploring and analyzing sustainable tourism solutions to problems and challenges in tourism development. She has taught a wide variety of tourism modules including Tourism Ethics, Sustainable Tourism, Crisis Management, Destination Management and Project Management. She is currently involved in research of best practice in Sustainable Project Management and Soft Skills in tourism contexts to help address adverse impacts and increase viability of tourism in local destinations.

Sheena will give a short introduction on the NTG project.

Ana María Camps

She has a Higher Programme in Tourism Business Management (IE Business School), a Diplome d'Etudes Europeennes, Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) and a Degree in Economics and Business Studies, Economics Section, specialising in International Economics and Economic Development, from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Since 2006 she is in charge of the following in CEHAT: Training Department, Coordination of Occupational Risk Prevention projects, Relations with Europe, Financing of the hotel sector,  Department of Studies and Sector-specific statistics (REVpar, ADR), Cehat Hotel Monitor (monthly) and Quarterly forecasts: Observatory of the Spanish Hotel Industry.

Ana Maria will talk about the NTG online Matrix. This tool will answer to the question of which skills will be required in the tourism industry. It will explain and present the different digital, green and social skills, entry levels, and opportunities for training (that are required for positions) in the tourism industry.

Marie-Christin Gerke

Marie-Christin Gerken (27) spent a year of working holiday in New Zealand after finishing High School. She then decided to do an apprenticeship in Eventmanagement - a three year course that is very practical-orientated. In oder gain a higher degree she then made the choice to go to university and study Eventmanagement. With the goal to deepen her professional experience while studying she chose to apply at Leipziger Messe  for the dual study course at DHBW Ravensburg. Leipziger Messe is one of Germanys Top 10 trade fair organizers and among the worlds Top 50 trade show grounds. During her three-year-programme she spent time in five different departments such as HR, Trade Show Organizing, Controlling or Marketing with periods of studiying and working alternating. In September this year she finished her studies with a bachelors degree and has worked as a project manager for Leipziger Messe since.

Igor Leben

Igor Leben holds a university degree, and he's been the head of HR at hotel Le Meridien Lav, Croatia (Le Meridien is one of Marriott's 30 lodging brands) since the hotel's complete renovation in 2006.

Igor is one of the business partners in the INCOME Tourism project and will present their best practices.

Jo Sanmartí

Jo Sanmartí is student at the University of Girona and will be participating in the pilot of the INCOME Tourism project cooperative education model.

The projects

The INCOME Tourism project aims to foster a new learning approach, linked to the development of soft skills and based on a cooperative learning process that brings together higher education institutions and businesses in the tourism industry.

The Next Tourism Generation Alliance (NTG) is the first European partnership and alliance for improving a collaborative and productive relationship between education and industry. The NTG Alliance will provide employees, employers, entrepreneurs, teachers, trainers and students with a set of Core NTG modules in digital, green and social skills.
